I provide copyediting and proofreading services for a variety of projects, including but not limited to academic papers, business memos, brochures, novels, ebooks, emails and websites. My task as your editor is to weed out any errors and inconsistencies in your writing before it is published. There are two different kinds of editing: copyediting and proofreading.
Copyediting:
When I copyedit I correct errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, style and usage. I also make sure that your writing is clear, correct, concise, comprehensible and consistent.
Proofreading:
Proofreading is done after copyediting. Many people mistakenly assume that proofreading and copyediting are the same thing. This is not true, but the two practices do overlap some. Proofreading involves checking for spelling mistakes, punctuation, typos, capitalization errors and awkward grammar.
Factchecking:
In addition to editing, I also provide factchecking services. Factchecking involves verifying factual assertions in non-fictional text. Factchecking is important for writers who are not trained reporters. Because factchecking is a time-intensive activity that requires quick and accurate research, writers often do not have the time to verify mistakes made unintentionally.
In every document, I check for:
Typographical errors
Grammatical mistakes
Sentence structure
Organization and flow of paragraphs
Idiomatic English
Spelling
